Ten demands from cyclists to the new city government
Before the municipal elections in the city of Salzburg, the parties now represented in the new city government spoke out in unison in favor of additional measures for more cycling. To ensure that this is not just lip service, Radlobby Salzburg, together with numerous other organizations, is inviting people to a large bicycle demonstration on 26 April 2024.
A list of demands with ten points will be presented to city politicians.
The expansion of cycling infrastructure in the provincial capital has not kept pace with the growing number of cyclists in recent years. Numerous projects agreed in the city's cycling strategy were canceled or not yet implemented during the last term of office. Traffic experts recently saw a lot of room for improvement in terms of cycling potential in Salzburg.
"During the election campaign and in initial statements after the election, the representatives of the new city government made initial encouraging promises, such as for higher cycling budgets. This must now be turned into reality, and we want to give the new city government strong encouragement to do so," says Harald Gaukel, Chairman of the Salzburg Cycling Lobby.
The advocacy group's concerns include a higher budget for cycling, an efficient cycling task force in the city council, the safe connection of every school to the cycle path network and high-speed cycle connections to neighboring municipalities. The declared aim is to increase the cycling mode share from 23 percent to 35 percent by 2034.
The demonstration starts at 3 p.m. in the Kurpark in front of the Kongresshaus. After a cycling tour through the city center, the ten demands "More for cycling!" will be handed over to the new city government. In the run-up to the event, some of the organizers recalled the years 1979, 1981 and 1983, when for the first time people in the city took part in large bicycle demonstrations for better cycling conditions.
