How to get your bike ready for spring

Seven out of ten people in Germany already use their bikes as a means of transportation. The bike should be thoroughly checked at the start of spring. 

The buds are blossoming, the temperatures are rising: For many, the start of spring also marks the beginning of the cycling season. Bicycles are becoming increasingly popular across the country: seven out of ten people already use their bike as a common means of transportation. But before you start pedaling again, you should check your bike thoroughly.

From tire pressure, lights and reflectors to functional brakes, don't forget to oil and clean the chain. The Verkehrsclub (VCÖ) also recommends an annual service at a specialist dealer.

How satisfied local cyclists are with the prevailing conditions is currently being determined in an online survey by the VCÖ. There is certainly great potential for more cycling in Lower Austria, as almost half of everyday journeys are shorter than five kilometers - and therefore within easy cycling distance.

Check the infrastructure
"A good indicator of the quality of the cycling infrastructure is the number of families cycling with children in the town. If there are a lot of children on bikes, this is a sign of good quality traffic planning in the town," explains VCÖ spokesperson Christian Gratzer.
