Pupils learn to take responsibility

The topic of awareness-raising was on the timetable of two classes at Egger-Lienz secondary school. The pupils were able to implement their own projects on the so-called "Do it Day". The East Tyrol Waste Management Association also used the day to do something good for the environment.

"Pupils don't learn for us, but for life - for their lives" - this was the motto of a very special day for pupils in classes 1i and 4a at Egger-Lienz secondary school. Teachers wanted to sensitize the adolescents and show them that they also have to take responsibility for their actions. On Do-Day, or "Do it Day", this was integrated into the lessons. The children spent four hours a week working on projects - with the aim of communicating with their fellow human beings on an equal footing and at the same time thinking about the environment.

Creatively implementing their own ideas
The groups were allowed to be creative and design their own ideas and projects - always under the supervision of the teachers. For example, there was the "Baking cookies campaign" followed by a sale, a visit to a residential and nursing home or a dissection experiment.

Waste usually ends up in the countryside out of thoughtlessness and convenience, but often also on purpose.

Collecting waste is already a tradition
The Waste Management Association East Tyrol (AWVO) also uses this "Do it Day" to continue a small tradition. With a waste collection campaign in all 33 East Tyrolean municipalities, the aim is to draw attention to littering in nature and set an example.

"Waste usually ends up in nature out of thoughtlessness and convenience, but often also on purpose," they say. There it not only harms animals and plants, but is also carried into bodies of water or rivers by the wind and weather. The dates are published on the websites of the respective municipalities and the AWVO.
