DNA traces at the crime scene led to the man who, together with an unknown accomplice, broke into the Vienna apartment of Minister Karoline Edtstadler in the summer. Today, the 50-year-old Serbian man had to answer to the lay assessor's court in Vienna.

"Everything is right. I did it", says the man, who has six previous convictions, in the Vienna Provincial Court. The man states that he wanted to visit his daughter in Vienna: "It happened. I'm sorry", the accused is taciturn but remorseful. "It didn't happen. You had burglary tools with you," corrects Judge Harald Craigher. "My client saw packages outside the apartment and concluded that no one was home," says defense lawyer Peter Philipp. "He had no idea that it was a minister's apartment."

Minister saw break-in via camera
While Constitutional Minister Karoline Edtstadler was enjoying the sun in Nice on August 23, a burglar warning sounded on her cell phone. Together with an as yet unidentified accomplice, the masked men used a lever and a pressure plate to break open the security door of the apartment.

The burglar was surprised by the cameras in the apartment. He and his colleague quickly turned them to the side and turned off the power. Not quickly enough. Edtstadler immediately alerted the police from France. "When my client heard the sirens, he fled immediately," says Philipp. Two months later, the man was finally arrested, DNA traces on the metal fence of the apartment building finally gave him away.

Minimal loot, major consequences
The break-in was by no means worthwhile for the duo. Although the men diligently collected valuables and packed them all into a trolley, they left it behind with the loot worth at least 8,000 euros, according to the indictment. The police were not long in coming. What the two Serbs did manage to pocket was 60 euros in cash, a WLAN camera of the same value and the minister's credit card.

Due to the relevant previous convictions, the sentence was swift: four years in prison for the Serb. The sentence range was up to 15 years in prison. The burglar accepts the sentence, which is final.
