“The result in the city is disappointing”

Governor Haslauer is counting on getting along well with the new city leader and sees Kreibich in the next city government.

Whether on the board of trustees of the Salzburg Festival, the S-Link or Salzburg AG: following the change of mayor in the city, Governor Wilfried Haslauer will have a new counterpart in all matters concerning the city and province. It will probably not be any easier for the ÖVP leader. "We had an excellent working relationship with Harry Preuner," Haslauer told the "Krone" newspaper. Now we have to wait and see who will be the next mayor. "But I also worked well with Heinz Schaden," says Schaden and does not anticipate any problems with the new mayor in this regard. "It's in the interests of both of us that it works."

Haslauer is not in an alarmist mood, even though he says: "The result in the city is disappointing". He has consolation for election loser Florian Kreibich: "It's often the case that you don't win the first time you run. I know what I'm talking about." Haslauer is alluding to his first state election in 2009, when the ÖVP also suffered a - much smaller - loss.

If Haslauer has his way, Kreibich should rebuild the city party and join the city government. The failed mayoral candidate has already indicated his willingness to do so. Haslauer is satisfied with the result in the rural communities. "When you have 99 mayors, the probability of losing a few is greater than gaining a few," says the provincial governor about the losses. However, Haslauer believes that the success of several independent lists shows that traditional party loyalty is declining.
