Space debris is now flying around our ears
Space debris in the form of battery packs from the International Space Station ISS will enter the Earth's atmosphere between Friday and Saturday. The effects will also be seen and heard in Vorarlberg. Fortunately, it is unlikely that the debris will hit the Earth's surface.
According to current overflight calculations by the German Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), a larger space object is expected to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere between midday on Friday and midday on Saturday, possibly fragmenting. According to current information from the BBK, the object is a battery pack from the International Space Station (ISS).
The BKK's overflight calculations have shown that between 8.45 p.m. and 9.15 p.m. possible effects can also be expected in large parts of Vorarlberg. "Based on the current state of knowledge, however, only light effects and a possible sonic boom are to be expected," reassures Provincial Security Councillor Christian Gantner.
Nevertheless, developments are being closely monitored. "We are in close contact with the Ministry of the Interior and the provinces of Tyrol and Carinthia, which are also affected. We will of course keep the population informed of any changes to the situation," explained the State Councillor.
