A bullet tempts him

Marco Odermatt is still the measure of all things in the ski circus. In addition to crystal globes, he is also on the hunt for various records. However, the Swiss skier reveals that he would just like to go to the start again and not think about his "series". But there is one particular ball that particularly excites him.
New potential records are constantly keeping Aspen double winner Marco Odermatt on his toes. It's not just that the 26-year-old Swiss could also bring home the Super-G (22nd March) and downhill (24th) at the World Cup finale in Saalbach-Hinterglemm after securing the crystal globes for the overall World Cup and giant slalom in the USA. Among other things, the sole best mark for winning records in a season and the highest points haul are also up for grabs for the ski racer of the moment.
The chance to set new series and records keeps pushing him on, explained Odermatt. At the same time, however, he simply wishes he could stand at the start without a care in the world. "At some point today, the thought occurred to me that it would be nice if all these series were broken, then you could go into every race as normal," he said in an ORF TV interview on Saturday. To add that all the successes would still be nice.
In the footsteps of Hermann Maier
Odermatt traveled back to Europe from America with 1,902 points in his account. He still has a giant slalom in Kranjska Gora and Hinterglemm, as well as a downhill and a super-G in the final. He has held the record for the most World Cup points in one winter since the previous season with 2,042 - no one doubts that he will improve on this at the season finale in Salzburg.
In the World Championship venue of 2025, he will also leave the starting gate as the leader in the downhill and super-G rankings. Should he actually win four crystals this year, he will be the first since Hermann Maier in 2000/01.
And one crystal is particularly close to his heart. "Right now, if I could choose, it would of course be the downhill crystal. It's the supreme discipline, winning it takes the most. The downhill races are so different. It's only now that you realize what Beat has shown with four small balls in a row. That's incredible in the downhill," said Odermatt, recalling his compatriot Feuz, who won the discipline from 2018 to 2021.
