USA and Qatar threaten EU with gas supply freeze
Is the EU bureaucracy turning off the gas tap? In an open letter, the USA and Qatar are threatening to stop deliveries of liquefied natural gas (LNG) if the EU sticks to the planned supply chain law. A new supply crisis is looming. The consequences would also be devastating for Austria, as two thirds of Europe's LNG volumes come from these two countries.
A wafer-thin majority in the EU Parliament has halted further negotiations on cutting red tape and prevented a weakening of the bureaucratic Supply Chain Directive. From mid-2027, companies will be obliged to monitor their supply chains for breaches of environmental regulations and human rights violations. However, the associated bureaucracy is taking on proportions that many critics believe clearly jeopardize competitiveness; the "bureaucracy monster" is apparently not very popular outside the EU either. This is because it requires suppliers to comply with higher standards and provide meticulous proof of this.
