Hot days now followed by snow warning for Tyrol

At the weekend it was still sweating at a summery 30 degrees. Now comes fresh snow!

Tough times at the moment for all those sensitive to the weather: While many places were still sweating at almost 30 degrees or more at the weekend, there is now a snow weather warning for Tyrol. A massive cold front is bringing fresh snow down to the valleys, with up to 60 centimetres possible on the mountains! In the rest of Austria, maximum rain showers are only expected on Wednesday.

Based on the current forecasts, GeoSphere Austria is issuing a snow weather warning (warning level "orange", level 3 of 4) for today, Tuesday evening, until tomorrow, Wednesday afternoon. "According to the current weather models, the snow line will drop to 700 to 1000 meters during the night," reads a statement from the province.

Over half a meter of fresh snow possible on the mountain
The main ridge region between the rear Ötztal and the rear Tuxertal is mainly affected. Snowfall of up to 60 centimetres is expected in places. The precipitation is expected to ease significantly on Wednesday afternoon and then subside in the evening.

20 to 40 centimetres of fresh snow in the valleys
Up to 20 centimetres are forecast in valley locations and up to 40 centimetres in higher valley locations - including the Brenner region, the Ötztal and the Tux valley head. "The amount of precipitation will be significantly lower towards the north," it continues.

After breaking heat records in Austria and Tyrol in recent days, winter is now returning in full force. In this context, the province of Tyrol would like to remind everyone that winter tires are mandatory until 15 April. The risk of avalanches also remains an issue.

Avalanche warning level three
In the regions along the main ridge, the fresh snow is leading to a short-term fresh snow problem with considerable avalanche danger (level 3) above 2200 meters. Caution is required above all on very steep slopes close to the crest in the high mountains. In addition, increased loose snow avalanches from extremely steep terrain are to be expected, especially when the weather brightens up. Sliding snow avalanches on steep grassy slopes should also continue to be taken into account.

In the rest of the country, the sun will mostly shine on Tuesday. On Wednesday, however, the early summer weather will be overshadowed by a drop in temperature of ten degrees. In the morning it will rain widely from Vorarlberg to Salzburg, sometimes heavily along the main Alpine ridge. However, the rain clouds will clear again in the afternoon. Thursday, Friday and Saturday should be warmer again, with sunshine throughout the country.
