In an interview with krone.tv, Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner outlines the Austrian Armed Forces' defense readiness. In response to the question of how the army would react if Vienna were attacked from the air during the night: "Austria undoubtedly has a very good radar data system with the Goldhaube, where we really don't have to shy away from comparison with other armies."

"There is no question that upgrades are needed here, which is why a first step has already been taken with the modernization of the anti-aircraft guided missiles. However, the implementation of the entire rearmament program and the necessary training will still take time, as the military build-up plan extends to 2032 and beyond. However, it will be possible to respond to threats earlier. Tanner: "We must and would already find ways to protect the airspace. But these are not the most modern ones at the moment. That's why we have the build-up plan," says Tanner.

On the likelihood of future hostilities between Russia and the EU, the Minister said: "It cannot be ruled out. In any case, we have to prepare for this, for all threats that could come. An escalation simply cannot be ruled out. But on the other hand, I also think that now is not the right time to stir up particular fear. We must make ourselves strong, especially for peace."

Threat from cyberspace
What would the situation be like for Austria if an EU country were attacked? Tanner: "Within the EU, there is a duty to provide assistance and this is regulated by law. The duty to provide assistance can be exercised in various ways and must be decided depending on the situation. It doesn't necessarily have to be military, but can also be humanitarian. However, it is necessary that we as Austria become so strong and that this is also clearly visible to the outside world so that nobody crosses the borders. But not only in the real world, especially in the super election year, these are destabilization measures by taking over Russia's narratives. This should also be seen as a threat and a risk. Everything to do with deep fakes. This means that we also have to prepare ourselves in cyberspace. We here in Austria as a neutral country, but also the entire European Union."

There are currently three key areas in the Austrian Armed Forces in which money is being invested: In mobility with trucks, combat and infantry fighting vehicles, in the fighting troops regarding uniforms or modified assault rifles and in infrastructure such as in barracks.
