Shortly before the absolute highlight of this year's carnival celebrations, the police step up their checks. The main focus is on drunk driving. Almost 80 officers from the provincial traffic department and the district police commands were on duty last weekend in Burgenland alone.

From 4 p.m. on Saturday until around 2 a.m. on Sunday, they checked 900 cars. 802 breathalyzer and breathalyzer tests were carried out. Six drivers had more than 0.8 per mille, one driver was under the influence of drugs. The inglorious front-runner was a 33-year-old in the district of Eisenstadt, who was driving with a blood alcohol level of 1.84 per mille.

19-year-old driver sped away from police
A 19-year-old driver caused a stir in Oberwart. Instead of the permitted 50 km/h, the holder of a probationary driving license sped along at 120 km/h. Outside the city limits, he stepped on the gas and sped off at 200 km/h. Only half that speed would have been legal. The police took up the pursuit. The reckless driving was promptly stopped. The probationary driver's license is gone!

A car driver in the district of Eisenstadt disregarded a 70 km/h limit. He was traveling at 135 km/h. In Oberpullendorf, a driver was caught driving at 94 km/h in the local area. In both cases, charges have been filed and driving license revocation proceedings have been initiated.

Motorcycle illegally upgraded
A 17-year-old in the Eisenstadt district was caught by the police on a tuned motorcycle.
