“World first” aims to expose drunk driving offenders

There were 396 fatalities on Austria's roads last year. Monitoring technologies based on artificial intelligence could help to prevent many of these accidents in the future. Other countries are already showing how this works.

Inattention and distraction (27.3 percent) were among the - presumed - main causes of fatal road accidents in Austria in 2023, followed by increased (or, according to the Ministry of the Interior, inappropriate) driving speed (25.6 percent). As many as 15 accidents (4.2 percent) with a fatal outcome were attributable to drink-driving.

Even if the figures remain at a comparatively low level, every single fatality is one too many - especially as many of these accidents could probably be prevented using modern technologies.
