Ganna strikes back in the second Giro time trial

Former world champion Filippo Ganna struck back in the second individual time trial of the Giro d'Italia on Saturday. The Italian, who was beaten by Tadej Pogacar in the first stage against the clock, won the 14th stage over 31 km on Lake Garda 29 seconds ahead of the Slovenian, who has been setting the pace for two weeks. 

Although Pogacar missed out on his fourth stage win on flat terrain, the UAE captain extended his overall lead ahead of Sunday's queen stage.

Pogacar already has a 3:41-minute lead over Geraint Thomas ahead of the 220-km marathon stage with 5,300 meters of climbing to the mountain arrival at the Mottolino ski station near Livogno. Ganna's Welsh Ineos team-mate overtook the Colombian Daniel Felipe Martinez, who had previously been in second place, in fourth place in the time trial (+1:14 min.). The Bora captain, who finished 14th, is 3:56 min. behind Pogacar in the overall standings.

Ganna celebrated his seventh stage win in the Tour of Italy, six of which the two-time world champion has achieved in the time trial. Third in the time trial was Thymen Arensman (NED/+1:07 min.), another Ineos pro. The best Austrian was Pogacar's UAE teammate Felix Großschartner in 39th place (+3:18).
