Arnold Schwarzenegger has announced that he was fitted with a pacemaker last Monday following three open heart surgeries.

The 76-year-old said he now has a "machine part", just like his Terminator character - and said he had to take a break from the gym, the Daily Mail reported.

He said on his episode of the Arnold's Pump Club podcast released on Monday, "Last Monday I had surgery to become a bit more of a machine: I got a pacemaker."

Schwarzenegger's honesty gives courage and hope
"I have to tell you that it runs counter to a big part of my childhood in Austria, where nobody - ever - talked about medical problems. Everything to do with healthcare was kept to themselves."

"But I've gotten so many messages and emails from people who, like me, were born with a bicuspid aortic valve, telling me that talking about my valve replacement surgeries has given them courage and hope to deal with their own," the "Terminator" star revealed. "So, if I know it helps people to go against my instinct for secrecy and be transparent, what choice do I have?"

Arnold reassured his fans that he was fine. He said, "First of all, I want you to know that I'm doing great!" He said he had surgery on Monday and had already been to a big environmental event with Jane Fonda on Friday.

Arnie thanks the doctors
"I want to thank my entire team at the Cleveland Clinic. All the doctors and nurses took great care of me and made the operation as painless as possible," the 76-year-old thanked the doctors.

He continued: "They also told me it was time to go through with it because the scar tissue from my previous operation had made my heartbeat irregular."

He explained: "It had been like that for a few years, so I kept in touch with my medical team and came in person at least once a year to have a full check-up and see how my heart was doing." The 76-year-old has already had three open heart operations.
