Ransomware attacks
State security investigates after cyber attacks in Lower Austria
There have been several cyber attacks on institutions in Lower Austria in recent days. In addition to the municipality of Korneuburg, the Laa an der Thaya thermal spa in the district of Mistelbach and the Economic Development Institute (WIFI) were also affected. The investigations are in full swing, according to the provincial police directorate.
The municipality of Korneuburg has reportedly been unable to access its data since Tuesday night because it is encrypted. "The technical department is working flat out to rectify the problem and data security is guaranteed," the website stated. Town hall employees can currently only be reached by telephone.
"Investigations are ongoing"
"The investigations are ongoing, we are working closely with the security authorities", said Deputy Mayor Helene Fuchs-Moser (ÖVP). For the city, paying a ransom to regain access to the data was out of the question.
The State Office for State Protection and Counter-Extremism (LSE) is working with the Directorate for State Protection and Intelligence (DSN). The Lower Austrian State Office of Criminal Investigation and the Federal Office of Criminal Investigation are also involved in the investigation, it was emphasized.
