“Gay sh…”: Scandal surrounding Hasenhüttl protégé

Wolfsburg professional Kevin Behrens has caused a scandal at a signing session. The protégé of coach Ralph Hasenhüttl refused to sign a jersey with rainbow colors. He then had to report for a meeting and has now spoken out on the matter. 

The scandal occurred at the end of September, as reported by "Sport Bild". It actually appeared to be a routine marketing appearance. But then Behrens was presented with jerseys with which the club wanted to make a statement against homophobia. A special edition on which the club and sponsor logos or shirt number and name are printed in rainbow colors. 

Behrens refused to sign these jerseys. The 33-year-old allegedly explained: "I won't sign that kind of gay shit." The managers present were horrified by this. They informed the club's sports management. 

Incident was clarified internally
Behrens therefore had to go to sports director Sebastian Schindzielorz. There, the DFB player had to explain the incident. According to the club, the striker made it clear that he had no aversion to homosexuals. A penalty was apparently not imposed. He was also back in Hasenhütl's squad last weekend.

Behrens has since taken a stand himself and explained: "My spontaneous comments were absolutely not right. I would like to apologize for that. The issue was clearly discussed internally and I ask for your understanding that I don't want to comment on it any further."
