Storm in Carinthia: The damage was horrendous
Storms and thunderstorms: trees snapped like matchsticks, small rivulets turned into torrents, slopes slid down. The devastating storms of 2023 are etched in people's memories. "We were on high alert from one second to the next," says Völkermarkt's head of the building authority Armin Alic. His entire team, fire departments and numerous companies helped with the clean-up work.
No tree on the Drau cycle path
"There were no trees left on the Drau cycle path," says Arlic. The heavily frequented cycle path had to be closed for months. Many landslides along the R1 have now been cleared. On the Ruhstatt, however, it is still visible where the landslide occurred.
The situation was just as dramatic in St. Maragrethen ob Töllerberg, where the storm even destroyed the fire department's marquee. Alic: "The small streams have become raging rivers." Measures have already been taken on the Trixnerbach and Frankenbergbach streams. However, the road to the residents in Korb is still closed. The slope is still moving there. There was also massive damage in the Michaelergraben near Mittertrixen. Alic: "We had twelve landslides there, which have already been repaired."
Agricultural technology in use
The agricultural technology has been in use for months. Wildwood rakes have been installed in the stream bed. Alic: "This can prevent blockages." Massive damage also needs to be repaired on the vineyard.
