Amphibians on the move
Toads & co. “conquer” the local roads
Watch out, watch out: the toads are on the loose! At the start of the annual amphibian migration, numerous volunteers are once again working tirelessly this year to guide frogs, newts & co. safely across the road.
This is because the amphibians migrate to their spawning waters for six weeks just in time for the start of spring in order to ensure that their offspring are born. The dangers lurk above all on our roads. For this reason, more than 330 volunteers look after around 150 migration routes as part of the Naturschutzbund's protection project.
Every day, the many buried collection buckets along the protection fences are checked. "Road traffic is one of the main reasons why all amphibian species in this country are on the Red List of endangered species," says Margit Gross, head of the Naturschutzbund, urging drivers to be more careful.
