3 fatalities confirmed
Avalanche in Tyrol: Up to 10 people buried!
Major operation after a large avalanche in Tyrol in Vent (Imst district): A total of four people have been buried. Two winter sports enthusiasts have already been rescued dead, a third subsequently died. In addition, one alpinist was partially buried and taken to hospital with injuries.
The avalanche started at around 11 am in the Niedertal area in the municipality of Sölden. This route leads to the Martin-Busch-Hütte. A road leads into this area. About halfway along the route at around 2200 meters, an avalanche about 180 meters long and 80 meters wide probably broke loose east of the Talleitspitze and buried several people.
Three people died
According to the police, the victims were a Dutch touring group. They were traveling with guides. Three fatalities have already been confirmed: They are three men aged 33, 35 and 60. One buried victim (32) was flown by emergency helicopter to hospital in Zams with serious but not life-threatening injuries. There were a total of 18 people in the group, one of whom had probably already turned back before the avalanche.
The search operation had to be interrupted in the meantime because avalanches were being blown up. According to the police, further avalanches are currently occurring to the side of the accident site.
Several emergency services on site
According to control center manager Bernd Noggler, five emergency helicopters were deployed, as well as a helicopter from the Austrian Armed Forces and an aircraft from South Tyrol. The Innsbruck professional fire department made its way to Ötztal with a tanker. All Ötztal mountain rescue services were also on site and several avalanche search dogs were brought to Ötztal from the Oberland and elsewhere. "All hospitals have been informed in advance", said Noggler.
On Thursday, Tyrol's mountains were at a relatively low avalanche warning level two on the five-point scale. This means that the avalanche danger was assessed as "moderate". Nevertheless, the experts warned of spontaneous loose and sliding snow avalanches. The danger of loose snow avalanches would increase with the rising temperatures and sunlight during the course of the day, especially in extremely steep terrain.
