Russia considers building a nuclear power plant on the moon
According to official information, Russia is considering the construction of a nuclear power plant on the moon. The construction will not be done by hand, but automatically, and the technical solutions for this already exist in practice, the head of the Russian space agency Roskosmos assured on Tuesday.
"Today we are seriously considering the project of delivering and building an energy plant on the surface of the moon, sometime between 2033 and 2035 together with our Chinese colleagues," explained Yuri Borisov at an event for young people. The head of Roscosmos also emphasized that it was not about stationing nuclear weapons in space. Russia has always spoken out against this and will maintain this stance.
Speculation about nuclear weapons against satellites
There had recently been speculation in the USA that Russia wanted to combat satellites with a new type of nuclear weapon. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin vehemently rejected this speculation.
Russia and China signed a declaration of intent in 2021 to expand their cooperation in space - also against the backdrop of increasing tensions between Moscow and the West. Russia has announced its withdrawal from the ISS space station. However, the cooperation, which was originally due to end after 2024, is now to continue at least until 2028. China has its own program to explore the moon.
