Lebanon: “International law allows resistance”

The Lebanese Foreign Minister considers the rocket attacks by the Shiite militia Hezbollah on Israel to be justified. The neighboring state has occupied Lebanese territory for decades, "and international law allows resistance to occupation", said Abdallah Bou Habib on Thursday after a meeting with Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg in Beirut (see video above).

Bou Habib was speaking at a joint press conference with Schallenberg when asked by APA whether his government has any means of exerting pressure on the powerful Shia militia. The Lebanese Foreign Minister specifically demanded that Israel conclude an agreement on the course of the land border with his country, along the lines of the agreement already reached on the sea border. If Israel were to withdraw completely, "the problem of Israel and Hezbollah would be at least partially solved".

Hezbollah's rocket arsenal much larger than that of Hamas
Since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas, there have been fears that Hezbollah, which is allied with the terrorist organization, could open a second front in northern Israel. The militia is far stronger than the regular Lebanese army and has a rocket arsenal that dwarfs that of Hamas. This is why Israel repeatedly flies missions to destroy Hezbollah facilities and commanders in the northern neighboring country.

"So far, the provocations have remained within certain limits. And I hope it stays that way," commented Schallenberg on the clashes between Hezbollah and Israel. All actors are called upon to exercise the utmost restraint, the Foreign Minister said, probably also in the direction of Israel. However, he only mentioned Hezbollah by name, warning them to "play with fire".

"Austria is not a bystander"
Schallenberg said that Austria is "not a bystander" in Lebanon. He referred to the 176 Austrian Armed Forces soldiers who are currently part of the UN peacekeeping force UNIFIL. The troops had a "calming" influence on the situation on the border, even if they were unable to achieve a withdrawal, he said, alluding to UN Resolution 1701, which stipulates that Hezbollah must withdraw to positions north of the Litani River. At the same time, he appealed to "everyone to do their utmost to ensure the safety of the peacekeepers".
