There are already more women than men in the laboratory on Austria's only Bachelor's degree course in Chemistry at the IMC in Krems - like Valentina Zach. The "Krone" visited her.

At the age of six, she was given a chemistry set - and her passion for the natural sciences has not waned since. At the IMC - the University of Applied Sciences - in Krems, her vocation is set to become a profession: Valentina Zach from Bisamberg in the district of Korneuburg is well on the way to doing so with the only UAS degree course of its kind in Austria.

The 21-year-old has already successfully completed four semesters of her Bachelor's degree in Chemistry with English as the language of instruction. "I've always been interested in this field," says Zach. However, her decision to study chemistry came as a surprise to some. "We actually have more women than men on the course," says the budding scientist. And some of them come from all over the world.

Interest has been there since childhood
But what is so fascinating about it? "Knowing the background to everyday phenomena. Chemistry is everywhere," says the 21-year-old, enjoying each of these "aha" moments. She finds the necessary balance to everyday lab work in sport. After successfully completing her studies, including a Master's degree and doctorate, the Lower Austrian wants to go into research.

Industry, research or teaching
"Our graduates are in high demand," confirms Anita Koppensteiner from IMC Krems - whether in industry, research or teaching. The biochemist used to study at IMC herself. Just like Valentina Zach, who will be spending six months at the University of Chicago for a mandatory internship in the coming semester. "Many come back with concrete job offers," says Koppensteiner.
