"Extremely dangerous"

82-year-old drove six kilometers as a wrong-way driver

An 82-year-old man drove the wrong way for six kilometers on the A8 motorway on Friday, also speeding through two tunnels. According to witnesses, there were several "extremely dangerous situations". A driver was finally able to stop the senior citizen.

The 82-year-old from Ohlsdorf drove onto the A8 in the Wels-Wirtschaftspark area shortly after 11 a.m. on Friday, but against the prescribed direction of travel. For around six kilometers, the driver continued unperturbed as a wrong-way driver in the direction of Voralpenkreuz.

The 82-year-old also drove through the Noitzmühle and Steinhaus tunnels as a wrong-way driver. It was only after the second tunnel that he was stopped by another driver who was the first to reach the closed tunnel.

Drivers were lucky
Witnesses told the police that there were several "extremely dangerous situations". It can therefore be considered lucky that no accidents occurred and that all road users survived the six-kilometre-long wrong-way journey unscathed.

The 82-year-old's driver's license was temporarily confiscated and he will be reported to the police.
