Lothar Matthäus:
“I would be in favor of Nagelsmann at Bayern”
Who will be Bayern's new coach? Germany's record team player and Bayern icon Lothar Matthäus is in favor of Julian Nagelsmann's return.
"The European Championship wouldn't interfere with a commitment to Bayern next season at all. Nagelsmann can bring this chapter of the national team to a successful conclusion," said Matthäus in the program "Sport und Talk aus dem Hangar-7" on ServusTV.
"I'm certainly of the opinion that Julian Nagelsmann was suspended or dismissed too early last year, because not everything that shone was gold, but he was pretty much on his own - he was FC Bayern's foreign minister, so to speak. He had to comment on many issues that were ultimately not part of his area of work. He also didn't have the backing of Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic and other managers, and FC Bayern should learn from that."
Matthäus' conclusion: "Ultimately, this means that Nagelsmann should also be protected, not pushed everywhere, not put in front of every microphone and I also believe that Julian has learned a lot in the last twelve months. He would do a lot of things differently than he did this year or in the year and a half he was in charge as Bayern coach. So I see Julia Nagelsmann as a solution that I would support."
