World premiere at Artedea promises a spectacle

The inner ear takes composer Stephan Kühne to new heights.

It is a spectacle with big sounds: five ensembles compete in a specially constructed arena in Klagenfurt's Konzerthaus. The Artedea competition, which was launched by the Klagenfurt Lions Club Artecon, is supported by "Kärntner Krone", ORF and the Gustav Mahler Private University of Music (GMPU).

Link between past and present
Each ensemble - Mahler Percussion, Trio Aeda, Rusalka, AFORM.duo and Carinthian Trombones - will have 15 minutes to present music from all stylistic periods, including new music from the 21st century. The brass octet will perform a world premiere. Villach composer Stephan Kühne has created a contemporary connection between works by Williams, Bruckner and Gabrieli. "The new-modern musical language flows into past eras," says the 67-year-old. In this way, the composer forges a link between the past and the present.

"I listen to my inner ear"
Kühne has been composing for decades: "I used to do everything by hand, now the computer is helpful." Kühne was head of the music school in Villach and worked at the provincial conservatory for many years: "I can't do without it. I listen to my inner ear - and that's how new pieces are constantly being created."
