Victims suffocated to death
Istanbul club with 29 fatalities probably illegally converted
One day after the tragic fire disaster in a club in Istanbul, in which 29 people died, the investigation into the cause is continuing. According to the provincial administration, the fire is believed to have started in connection with construction work. The renovation work is said to have been carried out without authorization.
The restaurant is located in the basement of a high-rise building in the Besiktas district of Istanbul. A fire broke out in the premises of the nightclub at lunchtime on Tuesday.
Nine people arrested
Nine people have been arrested so far, including the club operator and those responsible for the renovation, according to the state news agency Anadolu.
Bodies handed over to relatives
Most of the bodies have already been handed over to the families. Why they were unable to save themselves from the fire is under investigation.
Local guests probably suffocated
The newspaper "Hürriyet" quoted the manager of the building as saying that the fire was probably caused by the explosion of an oxygen cylinder near the exit. The people inside probably suffocated. Residents of the building had been complaining about the club in the basement for some time.
