Young man from Salzburg dreams of flying

From language high school up into the air. Paul Glöckler from Salzburg is following this unusual path. His efforts convinced Heliport Austria and the Technical University of Munich.

All over the country, companies are complaining about a shortage of young skilled workers. Aspiring school leavers like Paul Glöckler stand out in particular. "I've been interested in helicopters and airplanes since I was a child," says the Salzburg native. He will soon realize his dream. Paul wants to become a pilot. He recently got one of the coveted places at the Technical University of Munich. He will be studying aerospace engineering there from the fall, followed by his pilot's license.

Scientific work on forest fire in the Rax
Paul's path is unusual, as he graduated from the language-oriented Bundesgymnasium Nonntal. But it was here that he pursued his passion for aviation technology. "When I was 16, I heard about the forest fire in the Rax in Lower Austria. Helicopters and planes extinguished it and I wanted to investigate it scientifically," says Paul. He therefore dedicated his "pre-scientific work" for his A-levels to the subject.

He got a taste of the profession in St. Johann
The student gained practical knowledge about helicopters at Heli Austria in St. Johann. When the "Krone" met Paul at this helicopter base, he bumped into old acquaintances. He had completed two internships here. This helped him with his A-level thesis and Roy Knaus for his company. "We asked ourselves whether helicopters or planes are better at extinguishing forest fires," Paul explains. The answer was helicopters.

"We can transport 4000 liters of water with the Super Puma," Roy Knaus explains one reason. He now wants to use Paul's 70-page paper to get even more firefighting jobs in the future. Knaus pilots recently helped to fight the huge forest fires in Chile. Paul's work also impressed university experts. He received the Hans Riegel Prize from a German foundation for his work.

"The prize probably helped a bit with my application to the TU," smiles Paul. As soon as he completes his civilian service as a paramedic with the Red Cross, he starts his studies.
