Ten percent more skiers on the slopes

The Vorarlberg cable car operators are hoping for a strong end to a satisfactory season, but the pre-corona level has not yet been reached.

The interim figures presented by the local cable car operators on Tuesday are very pleasing: by the end of February, around 4.2 million skiers had been recorded on the slopes in Vorarlberg, which represents an increase of 10.2 percent. So it's no wonder that Andreas Gapp, Chairman of the Cable Car Section of the Vorarlberg Chamber of Commerce, is optimistic. "The start of the 2023/24 winter season was almost picture-perfect with great snow conditions in December and January," he explained. After that, however, things became difficult, especially for those ski resorts that are not so high up. Some were only able to record a few operating days this year or had to end the season in February due to the poor snow conditions. For this reason, the funding for small ski areas has also been adjusted, explained Gapp.

Despite the overall good interim results, the cable car operators were unable to return to pre-pandemic times this year: "Since coronavirus, we have been able to get more people excited about skiing every season. We are still not quite at the high level we had before corona, but we are close."

1000 kilometers of slopes
The season is not over yet. It's quite possible that we can still catch up if the conditions are ideal - winter sports fun doesn't end until the end of April. Throughout Vorarlberg, 287 cable cars and lifts are in operation, serving a total of around 1000 kilometers of pistes. On average, over 1000 employees and 25 apprentices are employed by the Vorarlberg cable car companies.
