“I didn’t lose the players!”
Six defeats in a row - and yet the timing came as a surprise: St. Pölten's basketball team fired coach Mike Coffin four games before the end of the placement round and the start of the play-offs. Junior coach Mike Kress takes over for the time being. The fired former coach strongly disagrees with the club's statements.
"The developments of the last weeks and months have forced us to set new impulses," the club said. Club manager Stefan Worenz explains: "If we had listened to various prophecies of doom, this would have happened sooner." Even if he admits: "Defeats are part of the game, you can't blame Mike. We are primarily concerned with development." That's exactly what Coffin saw: "I've already received over 50 messages asking why this happened - we made the top six. I can't understand it."
"We want to exploit the full potential, give young Austrians a chance," explains Worenz. Did Coffin want more legionnaires? "No, I never asked for more," assures the fired coach, "when the club wanted to bring in Rich Williams, I even turned it down because it would have taken playing time away from the Austrians."
"Didn't understand the system"
"Mike plays top-class basketball, but I don't know if everyone understood the system," says Worenz, "some had to think too much, which blocked them." Coffin also sees things differently: "I didn't lose the players, most of them stuck by me - the messages I've received show me that. I only wish them the best!"
