How did you feel at the SOS Children’s Village, Ms. Hruska?
Negative headlines about abuse and violence have stirred up Petra Hruska (55) and made her ill: now the woman who grew up in the SOS Children's Village Hinterbrühl in Lower Austria is going public and telling HER story.
A bright, friendly apartment in Vienna-Donaustadt. Petra Hruska has set a coffee table with chocolate cake, and there are lots of old photos in front of her. They show "Pezi", as she was called as a little girl, in a white dress at her first communion, under a lit Christmas tree, dressed up as a witch at carnival and on the beach in Holland. "There's my mom," she beams, pointing to a blonde woman in a dirndl. It is her children's village mother Ursula Holubar.
In a letter to the "Krone" newspaper, the Salzburg native wrote of her "great despair" at the reports of mistreatment, sexual abuse and years of cover-ups. Because she, like many others, experienced her time in the SOS Children's Village very differently.
