Christmas market in Innsbruck celebrates its 50th anniversary
The traditional Christmas market in Innsbruck's old town has enjoyed cult status for half a century now - and is also known beyond the borders of Tyrol! Mulled wine and punch have been warming hands and hearts in Innsbruck for 50 years. This is celebrated with golden anniversary cups and Peintner's mountain Christmas gingerbread.
Christmas markets have long been a tradition in Tyrol. As early as 1657, there was a St. Nicholas market on the town square in front of the Golden Roof. At that time, however, the Advent markets only lasted a few days.
The Christmas market as we know it today has existed since 1973. The beginning was still manageable: 17 stalls, only one of which was a culinary one. Some of the very first stall holders are still well-known names today - such as the Kröll bakery, Palmers, Ortner and Stanger, Munding confectioners and Walde soap and candle makers. In the meantime, however, a lot has changed at Innsbruck's Christmas market.
