Even though it's only the general election that's currently taking place, it's been impossible to imagine the cityscape without them for months: election posters. They will be with us for the rest of the year, as the EU elections, National Council elections and regional elections are just around the corner. How does a political scientist rate the subjects and slogans? The "Krone" asked.
For most of this year, politicians will be smiling at us in pedestrian zones or on roadsides and drumming up their slogans on posters, and various party campaigns have been running for some time. Currently also for the Styrian AK elections. After the EU elections in June, a short summer break will be followed by the election campaign for the National Council, which will merge almost seamlessly into advertising for the regional elections.
The Styrian AK elections are still two days away. For many frustrated politicians, this means keeping strong nerves. Closing your eyes is simply not an option with so many images of politicians.
But how does the trained eye of a political scientist view the flood of advertising on public spaces? We asked election researcher Heinz P. Wassermann, who teaches at the FH Graz Joanneum, about this.
