On average, we can hold our breath for around one to one and a half minutes - Jessea Lu's record is 8:01. She is a freediver and can go dozens of meters deep with just one breath, but there are risks involved. In an interview with Krone+, she talks about a dramatic dive.

Even in the Stone Age, people spent several minutes diving in the sea for shells, sponges and pearls. Underwater hunting for fish with spears is also still a widespread form of apnoea diving today. While most people have to breathe reflexively after a short time, some manage to hold their breath for many minutes with a lot of training - both physical and mental. This allows them to explore the underwater world without an oxygen tank.
