Significantly more unemployed “thanks” to economic downturn

Youth unemployment in Carinthia skyrocketed by 20 percent.

While the economic situation in the construction industry appears to be slowly recovering, the unemployment figures for young people are currently skyrocketing.

The miserable economic development is also having an impact on the Carinthian labor market. "Due to the economic slowdown, the number of job seekers increased by 6.9 percent in October," explains Peter Wedenig, Managing Director of the Carinthian Public Employment Service. Compared to other federal states, however, Carinthia would still come off best - the Austrian average is eleven percent.

But that is still no reason to be happy. The figures for youth unemployment skyrocketed in October. "We recorded an increase of 20 percent here," explains Wedenig, who sees this rise primarily in the retail and office sectors.

And while unemployment is on the rise in almost all sectors, the Public Employment Service even recorded a decline in the number of jobseekers in the construction sector. "The number here fell by seven percent. That's the lowest October figure since 2019," explains Wedenig.
