Oops, what's that sweet stuff in the fridge? That's probably what a 70-year-old pensioner in the Villach district thought when he ate three muffins that his wife had kept there. The problem: these were very special little cakes ...

A 66-year-old pensioner unintentionally sent her husband to hospital on Sunday. What happened? The woman bought a pack of three hashish cakes during a church trip to Amsterdam. She brought them back to Austria on the return bus journey.

She stored the "cupcakes", which were laced with cannabis, in the fridge in the kitchen. Her 70-year-old husband helped himself to them at around 2:30 pm on Sunday. He apparently knew nothing about the contents of the cupcakes, the police said. So he ate all three in one go.

The effects set in relatively quickly. The man complained of health problems. He was struggling with swallowing, breathing and circulatory problems. When he informed his wife about what he had ingested, she called the emergency services.

The pensioner was taken to Villach Regional Hospital for further treatment. The wife will also be charged under the Narcotic Substances Act.
