Car drove into restaurant – many emergency services on site

Major incident in Mittersill (Salzburg): On Sunday evening at around 10 p.m., a driver crashed his car into a pizzeria on the town square. The driver, a Pole born in 1987, lost control of his vehicle at around 10 p.m. in heavy rain. Several people were injured, some of them seriously.

A large contingent of emergency services was deployed to the Mittersill town square late on Sunday evening: the driver had veered right off the B165 (Gerlos Landesstraße) and crashed into the restaurant. According to Salzburg police, the driver probably lost control of his estate car due to inattention. He was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, apparently overlooked the bend and is said to have driven straight into the restaurant.

Several injured people come from Germany
While the driver survived the accident unharmed, several diners were injured. According to the Red Cross, three people suffered serious injuries and were taken to Salzburg University Hospital and Schwarzach and Zell am See Hospitals. Three people with minor injuries were also transported to Zell am See hospital. The Red Cross speaks of a total of six injured, the police of at least eight. The identity of the injured was only partially known on Monday morning, several of them are from Germany, according to the police spokeswoman.

The car only came to a halt in the restaurant
The exact course of the accident still needs to be clarified. In any case, the Pole was driving towards Hollersbach when he lost control of the car. The car continued straight ahead in a slight left-hand bend. It crashed through the glass window of the pizzeria and hit several tables before coming to a halt in the restaurant. The driver was not under the influence of alcohol, as a breathalyzer test revealed.

The Red Cross was on the scene with six ambulances and two emergency vehicles. A crisis intervention team was also on site to attend to a large number of witnesses who had witnessed the incident.
