If the European Central Bank (ECB) has its way, EU citizens will have another means of payment in addition to cash, debit and credit cards and various online payment services: the digital euro. However, experts are critical of it and warn of the risks.

Digital central bank money as a supplement to national currencies and competition for crypto money such as Bitcoin is being researched worldwide and, according to the ECB, should also be part of our everyday life in a few years' time. However, the "digital euro" is still a big unknown for most citizens - and experts also have doubts that the digital currency will catch on.
