Container classes at seven school locations in Vienna

Due to the very high influx of migrants, school locations in Vienna are at their limit. Container classes will therefore be used from the fall.

The capital is growing - which is also pushing schools to their capacity limits. Mobile classes are now being planned as an emergency solution. According to City Councillor for Education Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS), containers could be set up at a total of seven locations, each with up to twelve classrooms. The main reason for the measure is the recent family reunifications in the asylum sector, it is said. Several new school locations are opened every year, with around 1,200 new classes having been created in the past ten years.

But the trend is continuing: Recent crises and war events or an increase in demand in the area of special education have led to an increase in the number of pupils.

In view of the currently very high influx of family reunification, we are doing everything we can to create the necessary educational space.

The mobile facilities are due to go into operation in the fall. The costs for the construction of the container classes are estimated at 14 million euros.

This should solve the space problem, but not the shortage of teachers, which continues to prevail despite all our efforts.
