Andreas Babler has been party leader for less than nine months and the SPÖ is already falling back into old patterns of behavior. In the past two weeks, there have been several ricochets from within his own ranks. Political experts are also critical of his performance to date. What the experts are criticizing and who is being touted as his successor behind the scenes.
The foolish goings-on in the SPÖ began long before Shrove Tuesday this year - and to a certain extent with Hans Peter Doskozil. Around a year ago, Burgenland's governor challenged the then SPÖ leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner, and two weeks ago he called for an upper limit for asylum applications, which Andreas Babler, who outvoted him, does not believe in at all.
