Terrible accident in Vienna-Favoriten: A nine-year-old girl was hit by a streetcar on Wednesday. The child was taken to the shock room of a hospital by emergency helicopter. 

The nine-year-old wanted to cross Quellenstraße and was pushed down by the line 6 train, according to a spokeswoman for Wiener Linien. The child suffered a polytrauma and was taken to the shock room of a hospital by emergency helicopter after receiving emergency medical treatment, according to Wiener Berufsrettung. According to Wiener Gesundheitsverbund, however, the child is stable. The further course of the accident is not yet foreseeable.

Driver initiated emergency braking
The driver of the streetcar, who was traveling in the direction of Geiereck, initiated emergency braking, but was no longer able to prevent a collision, according to the Wiener Linien spokeswoman. How the accident came about is now being investigated by looking at the video surveillance.

Crossing the safety barrier at a red light
According to the police, a witness is said to have stated that the girl crossed the road at a pedestrian crossing. However, the traffic light for pedestrians was red, while the light for the streetcar was green.

The driver suffered a shock and was also taken to hospital. She is also being looked after by Wiener Linien's crisis intervention team. Lines 6, 11 and 14A had to be diverted for the rescue work.
