2026 U.S. Open
Tagger advances to the next round despite a 0-5 run in the second set!
What a roller coaster of emotions: Lilli Tagger advanced to the second round of the 2026 US Open after a temporary mental block! The East Tyrolean defeated Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch 6–0, 7–6(4) on Monday, though she squandered a 4–0 lead in the second set and nearly had to settle for a tiebreak …
Kronen Zeitung als bevorzugte Google-Quelle hinzufügen The 18-year-old didn’t give Korpatsch the slightest chance in the first set and was already leading 4–0 in the second set before her dramatic slump in performance. Korpatsch won five games in a row; Tagger was slow to recover and had to fend off two set points at 5–6. The Austrian was also down 1–4 in the tiebreak.
But then she won six points in a row, closed out the match with an ace after 1 hour and 56 minutes, and secured her third victory in her third match against the German. In the second round, Tagger will face the No. 10-seeded American Amanda Anisimova, who reached the finals at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open last year.
“We’re all human, and mistakes happen!”
Tagger, who was accompanied to New York by her parents, will likely play against the local hero in a large stadium. When asked if she was ready for that, the East Tyrolean replied, “Absolutely.” Tagger took the second-set struggles in stride.
“That’s part of the game—we’re all human, and mistakes happen. The most important thing is to learn from them.” She said that when the score was 6-0, 4-0, she started to think and see what was happening. “At that point, it was important not to think about the score and to find a way forward.”
Korpatsch Had Physical Issues
Korpatsch reported afterward that she had started feeling a little sick the day before the match, had a sore throat, and was feeling run-down. “The match was physically torturous for me. I’m very disappointed with how I felt. It wasn’t really any fun,” said the German.
