Home remedies for fever can be dangerous

The Austrian Society for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (ÖGKJ) has warned against dangerous home remedies for the little ones. Rubbing the skin with garlic or vinegar compresses against fever could also have disadvantages. For example, burns with blisters are possible on baby skin.

Menthol, mustard seeds, pepper, walnut shells, rosemary, laurel, buttercup and cowbell in compresses can also cause burns if they come into prolonged contact with the skin. It does not matter whether the household remedies are used as oil, crushed or chopped. The skin of small children is more sensitive than that of adults, according to the statement.

The sulphurous compounds in garlic can also cause burns when applied directly to the skin, while the acid in vinegar can cause irritation even at low concentrations.

Seek medical advice
ÖGKJ board member Bernhard Jochum recommends that parents with small children should consult a pediatrician before using the product. Special care should be taken with babies.

"Cooling calf compresses for fever are only suitable for children aged six months and over and should only be used briefly on small children. Under no circumstances should the child be 'shocked' by the cold water or freeze. Curd compresses can be used to help with fever, coughs and pneumonia," said the pediatrician from Bludenz.
