Argentina also withdraws from the WHO

Following the United States, Argentina has now also announced its withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO). This was announced by Manuel Adorni, the spokesperson for Argentinian President Javier Milei.

He cited "profound differences in terms of health management, especially during the (coronavirus) pandemic" as the reason. In addition, Argentina did not want to allow "an international organization to interfere with our sovereignty".

Harsh accusations against WHO
The move comes just a few weeks after US President Donald Trump issued a decree ordering the USA to withdraw from the WHO. Trump had already criticized the organization during his first term in office and accused it of being too Beijing-friendly. During the coronavirus pandemic, he froze US payments to the WHO and declared his withdrawal. However, his successor Joe Biden reversed this decision before it came into force.

Trump's admirer does the same
Javier Milei, who is considered an admirer of Trump, was one of the few foreign heads of state and government invited to Trump's inauguration on January 20. The USA is the largest donor to the WHO. Its withdrawal is expected to leave a significant financial gap in the organization and could affect its ability to respond to global health crises.

It remains to be seen whether Argentina will fully follow the US example and formally withdraw. The decision could have far-reaching consequences for the country's healthcare system and its international cooperation.
