Since Saturday morning, a 70-year-old German hiker has been buried under an avalanche below the Binsalm in the Tyrolean Karwendel (municipality of Vomp). A search for him was still not possible on Wednesday.

According to Sandro Huber, head of the Achenkirch mountain rescue team, the avalanche risk is still too high. "We flew the area around the avalanche again on Tuesday with the Alpine Police and came to the conclusion that the search would have to be postponed further," says Huber.

It also seems uncertain that the search can be resumed on Thursday. "I'm expecting Friday," says Huber.

Out and about with a hiking group
As reported, the buried 70-year-old German was part of a hiking group of around 25 people who were descending from the Binsalm towards Eng on Saturday morning. An avalanche caught the 70-year-old around 100 meters above the valley floor.

The emergency services were able to locate the man using the RECCO system, but soon had to call off the search due to the risk of avalanches. A mountain rescuer was caught in an avalanche and partially buried. The man injured his cruciate ligament.
