Attack at Westbahnhof: suspect in custody

A 40-year-old man who allegedly beat up a man near Vienna's Westbahnhof station on Monday is now in custody. According to court spokeswoman Christina Salzborn, there is a risk that he will flee and commit the crime.

As reported, the 40-year-old is accused of punching a 30-year-old man in the face at around 4.30 a.m. on Monday. The victim had to be resuscitated by the ambulance and taken to hospital. His life is still in danger.

The motive is still unclear, said police spokesman Markus Dittrich. The two men are said not to have known each other. The 40-year-old was probably under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time of the attack.

The suspect was tracked down with the help of witnesses and was arrested on Tuesday evening. He is now being investigated for grievous bodily harm.
