The First World War: Europe’s original catastrophe

A few shots in June 1914 were enough to trigger a conflagration in Europe and the whole world. To mark the 110th anniversary of Austria-Hungary's declaration of war on Serbia, the "Krone" takes a journey through time to illuminate the terrible years between 1914 and 1918.

Resentment towards the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and the emperor had been burning for some time at the beginning of the 20th century. More and more peoples were turning away from the multi-ethnic state. But nobody could have guessed that the problems of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy would plunge the whole world into ruin.
