Swan with seven chicks rescued from main road

Last weekend, a family of swans strayed onto the busy B37a near Hollenburg in the district of Krems. Seven chicks were rescued, but for one animal all help came too late.

On Saturday, the Krems an der Donau fire department was called out to an animal rescue on the B37a near Hollenburg. A swan and its chicks had strayed onto the busy road. 

When the Florianis arrived, the police were already on site and closed the road to enable a safe rescue. The animal rescue service was also present and provided dog crates. The swan - the "parent" of the chicks - initially tried to evade rescue. A tricky situation for the emergency services. Eventually, however, they were able to bring the frightened animal to safety.

Seven chicks rescued
The seven chicks were also rescued. For one animal, however, all help came too late. When the emergency services arrived, they discovered that it had been run over by a vehicle.

The rescued swan family was transported to a body of water in Hollenburg. After a brief health check, it was released back into the wild.
