Germany records more and more cyber attacks

The number of cyber attacks from abroad on institutions and individuals in Germany increased significantly in 2023. As announced by German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser on Monday, attacks in which perpetrators were abroad or in an unknown location increased by 28 percent in 2023.

"The threat level in the area of cyber security remains high," said Faeser at the presentation of the current situation report at the German Federal Criminal Police Office in Wiesbaden.

"That is why we are acting so decisively - both nationally and internationally." According to the data, the number of crimes in Germany stagnated "at a high level" at 134,407 cases, a decrease of 1.8% compared to 2022. The clearance rate increased slightly to 32%.

The Federal Criminal Police Office has successfully dismantled criminal networks from which cybercrime originates, said Faeser. But: "We must continue to step up protection against the current threats everywhere." Faeser explicitly named Russia as the originator of cybercrime, also in connection with its war of aggression against Ukraine.
