Attempted murder and explosion in Vienna-Hietzing
On Thursday morning, a 49-year-old man poured petrol on his neighbor in an apartment in Hietzinger Auhofstraße in Vienna. After she was able to flee in time, he barricaded himself in the apartment, poured petrol on himself and set himself alight. Shortly afterwards there was a violent explosion.
His neighbor had previously reported the man with mental health problems for noise nuisance. According to the police, he then attacked her with a wooden object in the stairwell, injured her and then poured petrol over her. Shortly afterwards, he also tried to set the victim on fire.
Suspect set himself on fire
An attentive passer-by had witnessed the attack and intervened immediately. As a result, the victim managed to escape with bruises. The 49-year-old with Austrian citizenship then barricaded himself in the first floor apartment. When the emergency services, including WEGA officers, noticed a strong smell of petrol, they asked him to open the door. However, without success. Shortly afterwards, there was a violent explosion in the apartment.
Taser was used
WEGA officers then broke down the front door and saw the suspect with a knife, presumably self-inflicted injuries to the head and neck. Suddenly the man ran outside with his lower body on fire. There he was extinguished by the fire department and arrested with the help of a Taser.

Apartment fire quickly extinguished
According to the police, the man had poured petrol on himself and set himself alight. The fire in the apartment was extinguished by the Vienna Fire Department. Two guinea pigs were also brought to safety and handed over to the animal rescue service. The man and the woman were subsequently taken to hospital.
On Thursday afternoon, investigators asked the suspected jogger to contact the police as a witness. He is a man wearing orange-red outerwear and dark trousers, aged between 30 and 40.
