Glacier near Salzburg decreased by over 200 meters

The Austrian Alpine Association's volunteer glacier surveyors observed or measured 93 glaciers in Austria for their latest glacier report: All but one retreated in the glacier budget year 2022 to 2023.

On average, the glaciers have become 24 meters shorter,which is only the third-highest value in the 133-year history of the Alpine Association's glacier measurement service.

The decline on the Pasterze, Austria's largest glacier, is particularly dramatic. It is almost exclusively accessible via Salzburg, but belongs to Carinthia. At 203.5 meters, it has the negative record value and has achieved the highest loss in length.
